MGMT 5273 Strategic Leadership Week 4 Discussion Questions
Assignment 1: After reading the Prince, read Schiff (n.d.) Are You Machiavellian? (http://blog.poweredbyben.com/are-you-machiavellian/) , and take the MACH-IV test of Machiavellianism (http://personality-testing.info/tests/MACH-IV.php)
Answer the following questions:
What is Machiavellianism?
Are the ideas presented in the Prince still valid today? Use critical thinking and support from course materials and Schiff (n.d.). Compare, briefly, Machiavelli’s advice for leaders against and Jesus’ teaching on servant leadership.
Assignment 2: Jesus compared things that people would understand to help them to see what they couldn’t understand. When describing the cost of discipleship, Jesus said, “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.’
“Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won’t he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand? If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace. (Luke 14:28-32 New International Version)
Fifteen hundred years after Christ used this illustration, Machiavelli talked about the importance of counting the cost and strategically considering whether or not to go to war. Five hundred years later, any good financial advisor would tell you that this advice still holds. As we study leadership, we can find many examples of how God’s Word is true, even in topics like strategic planning. God is the original vision caster. If leadership is a creative process, who better to learn from than Him? As you have been reading about leadership theories and practice in this course, what else have you found to be scriptural truth in our secular readings? Does this impact your thoughts on integrating your faith with your leadership practice?
Assignment 3: Expand the discussion about your selection of the leader and style from the previous discussion by finding a section(s) and model(s) from the textbook that better describes this leader. Please post the following: Identify models and/or theories you have found for the Leadership Theory paper that better defines or explains this leader and the style in addition to the two references used during Session 3.
Find scriptural support for this analysis. Include your final thoughts – using critical thinking – about the ethical position or behavior of this leader.
